THE SUMMER CAMP KIDS LOVE!

Summer at The Hangout PDX 2024

LET THE SUMMER FUN BEGIN!

Designed for K-5 kids!

Our fun and enriching summer camps are designed for the artist of every level! From the novice painter to the expert clay maker, we work with all campers to inspire creativity, self-confidence, and friendship while introducing them to new art mediums and exciting experiences!

Each week we take a deep dive into a different art idea and give our kids the tools to explore the far reaches of their imagination! Through play based lessons, our campers will work with ceramics, painting, textiles, creative storytelling - and more!

Our camp days are broken up with indoor time where much of our artmaking activities happen, and outdoor-action time! We play games such as kick-ball, capture the flag, tag, frisbee- not to mention some outdoor relaxation time as well!

We believe at The Hangout PDX that every kid deserves a high-quality art education that is targeted towards each child’s unique interests and skillset. We take pride in creating a welcoming and safe environment for campers that helps unleash their inner artist while having fun with new friends.

Ready to make some art??

LET’S DO THIS!

Week 1: Drawing Fundamentals!

Monday - Friday   June 17 - 21, 2024

This week is for those young creatives that always have their sketchbook on hand - or want to dive into the 101 of fine art drawing! During this week we will make our own sketchbooks from scratch, explore classic subjects such as portraiture, landscape, and still life while learning to use a wide variety of drawing media - pencils, ink, charcoal, and pastels!

Week 2: Painting Bonanza!

Monday - Friday   June 24 - 28, 2024

During this week we will take on the colorful world of painting! Using watercolor, acrylic, tempera, and gouache, we will apply our painting skills to create still life, abstract, portraiture, and landscape works of art. We’ll focus on color theory, creating depth, and getting a bit messy with our art making. On the final day, our campers will take the art they’ve produced to curate and host their very own art gallery show!

Week 3: SEW MUCH FUN!

Monday - Friday   July 8 - 12, 2024

The perfect introduction to fibre arts! We’ll spend the week hand sewing our very own stuffed animals while learning some popular stitch techniques. Campers will explore different types of thread art such as embroidery and cross-stitch before receiving one-on-one lessons with a counselor at the sewing machine. At the end of the week, every camper will go home with sewing projects they have completed themselves, as well as an introductory understanding of textile arts!

Week 4: COMIC BOOKS & ILLUSTRATION!

Tuesday - Friday   July 15 - 19, 2024

Calling all comic book aficionados and future book illustrators! It’s time to bring your own superheroes and imaginary characters to life with Comic Books and Illustration Week! We will read and discuss short comics, graphic novels, children’s books, and editorial cartoons (so come prepared to share your favorite comic book/ storybook character!). We will practice classic drawing and lettering techniques, explore the greats of comic books through tracing and recreation activities, and finally create our very own comic book, graphic novel, or illustrated book! What story will YOUR art tell?

Week 5: SHARK ART - OOH HA HA!

Monday - Friday   July 22 - July 26, 2024

To celebrate the reigning fish of the seas (and everyone’s favorite week on the Discovery Channel) we’ll be diving deep into the depths of the ocean to show our love for sharks through some pretty jaw-some creations. We’ll sketch, mold, and build all things sharks with each camper taking home a self-made model replica of their favorite shark at the end of the week. This is de-fin-iately a week your camper won’t want to miss!

Week 6: ABSTRACT ART!

Monday - Friday   July 29 - August 2, 2024

Do you love to play? Do you love to make art that just goes against the grain!? What a coincidence because so do we! Inspired by modern and contemporary art forms, we will be breaking the mold and exploring art through the lens of the abstract artist! We’ll try our hand (and maybe our foot!?) at found object sculpture, painting, play-based artmaking, and collage. Time to let your minds run wild - it’s Abstract Week!

Week 7: All About Clay!

Monday - Friday    August 5 - 9, 2024

Time to seize the clay! This week we will learn all about the wonderful world of that messy, malleable art stuff that brings our imaginations to life. Using various clay mediums, campers will enjoy creating hand-built pottery, sculptures, 3D art, and even jewelry. This is the perfect class for those creatives who don’t mind getting their hands dirty and have big plans to bring their 2D ideas to life!

Week 8: THE ART OF SCIENCE!

Monday - Friday   August 12 - 16, 2024

If you are a budding mad scientist with a knack for artmaking, come join us for a week where things will get slimy, hairy, and even explosive! Tapping into the laws of motion and energy, exploring everything from the micro-world of atoms to the wide expanses of our universe, we’ll be creating some truly out of this world art. No prior knowledge of chemistry or physics required!

Week 9: PORTLAND FASHION WEEK!

Monday - Friday    August 18 - 23, 2024

Do you have BIG dreams about becoming a fashion designer? Someone call Tim Gunn because there is a new fashion force taking the runway this summer! This week we’ll be using our skills in art to design our own collection of jewelry, patches, t-shirts, and more. We’ll even be composing our own fashion design sketchbooks to bring to life our most imaginative creations! Campers... make it work!

See you soon!
