With our After School Visual Art Program, In-Service Days, and Summer Art Camps, The Hangout PDX gives students the tools to become innovators, rule-breakers, imagineers, and creators. We’re helping inspire Portland’s next generation of artists and creatives.
The Hangout is a creative place rather than a “classes” based program- the kids work with our teachers and mentors to create an after school experience they love!
Our fun and enriching summer camps are designed for the artist of every level! From the novice painter to the expert clay maker, we work with all campers to inspire creativity, self-confidence, and friendship while introducing them to new art mediums and exciting experiences!
Every parent/ guardian needs a night off - and so do the kids! Check out our Date Nights at The Hangout where kids get to make art and watch movies while their adults get some well deserved R&R!
We love to host birthday parties and private events! We work with you and your budget to help design the party of your dreams.
About Us
We believe that art is for everyone and should be accessible to everyone. Kids should love their after school care and come home excited to talk to you about all the things they have created and learned. We are artists and educators dedicated to offering your child the freedom to make their own choices, explore new ideas, engage socially, and grow!
Teacher Emily
Emily is a self-taught artist who comes to us with an extensive background in both K-8 visual arts education and community art education. With her MA in Art Education from Ohio State University, Emily’s teaching methodology focuses on Universal Design for Learning, accessibility for neurodiverse and disabled learners in the arts, antiracist curriculum building, and progress-based development in her students’ artmaking practice. When she isn’t working with our students on the fine art of watercolor or pottery making, she enjoys renovating her home and spending time with her daughter!
Teacher Taylor
Taylor is a professional illustrator who earned their Bachelor of Arts in Illustration from the University of Kansas (Go Jayhawks!). Taylor’s five years of experience working in childcare has been instrumental in their teaching methodology, one that incorporates multidisciplinary focused lessons, multiple opportunities for engagement, and diversity in artistic representation within the school’s curriculum. In their free time, Taylor is working hard on the illustrations for their first children’s book, cuddling their cats Percy and Citrus, and exploring their new home here in the Pacific Northwest!
Teacher Daisy
Daisy joins the team teaching for our morning preschool program and assisting our teachers at The Hangout PDX. Born in Northern California and having received a BS in Health Education degree from California State University, Chico, Daisy joins us with over seven years of experience in working children varying from nannying, preschool, and summer camps. Daisy enjoys trying out new art techniques with her students with a focus on themed projects and process art. She finds magic in the act of getting messy and experimenting. When Daisy isn’t making art with kids, you can find her collaging, trying new recipes, reading thrillers, or working on getting her own art classes up and going!
Teacher Bo
Bo is a professionally and self-taught artist who brings with them a wealth of knowledge in fine arts and textiles! Having called many places home (California, Texas, and Italy to name a few!), Bo earned their BS in Psychology from Western Washington University and plans on furthering their education with an MA in Counseling. When Bo isn’t helping our kids fall in love with the visual arts, they fill their free time with artistic hobbies such as needle felting, knitting, embroidery, and illustration. Being the true multi-talented artist that they are, Bo is always working on at least three different art projects at once!
Teacher Skylar
Skylar is a Pacific Northwest native and professional illustrator who earned her Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art from Western Washington University. Bringing to our school a wealth of knowledge in illustration and graphic design, Skylar’s teaching methodology is guided by a curiousity for artmaking experimentation, an approach to instruction that is informed by inclusivity and representation, and a curriculum that explores the limitations of imagination. Finding joy in art making is a cornerstone of Skylar’s practice. In her off time, she can be found working on freelance illustration, drawing comics, or skiing down the slopes of Mount Hood!
